Chapter Eighteen
“SO ARE YOU SURE you don’t dance, honey?” Twyla said for the umpteenth time since joining Beckett at the pool table. “Because if you was to dance with me, that might just be enough to get things rollin’.”
He didn’t know what the woman was talking about, and he didn’t care. As he leaned over the table to take a shot, his attention wasn’t on Twyla’s ramblings or the six ball he’d planned on hitting into the corner pocket. No, his attention was solely on the cowboy’s hands wrapped around Starlet’s waist. The same cowboy he’d seen in the picture on Starlet’s nightstand.
Beckett’s hands tightened on the pool stick before he pulled back and rammed it at the cue ball with so much force that it bypassed the green six ball and jumped over the bumper of the table. It hit the cement floor with a resounding crack and then rolled straight toward Starlet and her cowboy lover. Ignoring it, Beckett used the eight ball as a cue and set up for another shot.
“My, but you suck at pool,” Twyla said. “Kenny Gene is really good at pool.” She glanced back over her shoulder, and her expression turned sad. “Are you sure you don’t want to dance?”
“Beckett doesn’t dance.” Starlet appeared on the other side of the table. Without the cowboy. In fact, the man was sprinting out the front door. Something that drew Twyla’s attention and got her moving.
“Excuse me, y’all, but I just saw someone I know.” She hurried out.
When she was gone, Starlet dropped the cue ball on the table. “I’m not sure, but I think you’re supposed to hit them in the pockets.”
Beckett took the ball and lined it up with the six. “So what happened to your boyfriend?”
“He’s not my boyfriend. He’s just an acquaintance.” Her gaze traveled to his ass, which had Beckett completely missing his shot. As soon as the ball ricocheted off the corner, she walked around the table, her finger trailing along the wood. While she usually wore loose-fitting, almost girlish dresses, tonight she wore tight jeans with little rhinestones and studs running along the front pockets and a silky tank top with a scooped neckline that showed just enough cleavage to have him grabbing his beer and taking a deep swallow. “How’s Billy and Shirlene?” she asked. “You’re staying at their guesthouse, aren’t you?”
“Yes.” He watched her finger move closer. “But not for long. I plan on leaving tomorrow.”
Her finger stopped. “Tomorrow? But you can’t leave tomorrow.”
He lifted his gaze from her finger to her face. Her hair had been pulled back in a ponytail, and she wore little or no makeup. But she didn’t need any. Her cheeks were full and flushed. Her lashes dark and long.
“And why can’t I leave tomorrow?” he asked.
She blinked those long lashes a couple times. “Because… because your brothers have missed you while you were in the marines.”
“I’ve visited with them enough. Besides, I need to see my parents.”
“Well, why don’t you invite
